All hail our ultimate rock chick Kate Moss, who is without doubt every girl's fashion barometer when it comes to packing the bag for a festival. Where Kate leads, others will inevitably follow. But a word of warning to all: please try and steer well clear of Kate Moss for Topshop at this spring/summer's festivals unless you want to run the risk of looking like….everybody else. Kate would most definitely not approve.
Kate wore her classic Hunter wellies and micro shorts look way back in 2005 (yes it was that long ago), which of course spawned a thousand Moss-ites. But the waistcoat and wellington combo was something Kate was rocking then, I think you’ll agree that now it’s 2010, it’s time for us to scratch our heads and think of something a bit different.
Last week at London Fashion Week one trend stood out as being perfectly suited to festival chic. Named by Vogue as ‘easy utilitarian’ the trend is summed up by using key elements of this season such as practical footwear, an earthy colour pallet, rough, organic materials and lots and lots of layering, This look is about comfort worn with a glamorous “Saaaaay what….?!” attitude.
Injecting this particular catwalk style into your festival wardrobe is a cinch with the look being surprisingly practical. Think lots of loose layering pulled together by a leather belt nipped around the waist and finished off with some gladiator sandals (or cute ankle boots) and a slightly worn leather satchel.
Plus, when it gets muddy, the Hunters you bought especially for festival go-ing this year won’t compromise your perfectly put together outfit, they’ll complement it nicely. Accessorise with leather wristbands instead of expensive jewellery and leave your hair long and wavy to keep things natural and ‘earth mother’. For a more polished look, tie your hair back off your face with a bold print headscarf which will help you hide a multitude of unwashed festival hair sins on day 3.
As long as you keep clothes and layers loose and practical in earthy tones this spring you can’t go too far off the clothes rails. Remember that darker colours will also hide splashes of mud, drink spillages and cigarette burns as unlike festival queens Kate, Lilly, Peaches and Gywnny who are never far from their Winnebagos filled with rows and rows of clean and dry clothes - you won't even have a full length mirror to check out your style.
Simplicity is key to looking good this season, don’t be scared Moss-ites - embrace it!
